About the Artist
From a very early age, through holidays with my family, I developed a love Britain's countryside and amazingly varied coastal landscape. Being in an open and endless landscape has always made me feel quite overwhelmed. There's so much to take in and I want to paint it all!
Growing up there was always a plentiful supply of pencils, paints, paper, modelling clay and all manner of art materials in my childhood home so it was only natural to me that I used them to explore ideas and feelings about world. Once at school I had the luck of an interested art teacher, and was inspired to learn how to truly observe the world.
After loosing myself in a career for a while I rediscovered my artistic self when I moved to rural Southern France, a time and place that gave me space to loose myself in nature. So I dug out my pencils once again. I am now living in North Yorkshire, the home of my partner's family, and I take inspiration from the rich and varied landscapes of this county and those available further afield when travelling with my dog Archie.
I find coastlines and rivers particularly appealing as subjects of my art as they reflect the light in such interesting ways and cause such atmospheric scenes. I also love framing in close and looking at the intimate landscapes between trees and nature. I am particularly happy when I am able to make the kind of marks that capture the impression of the subject with the least fuss and effort. This takes lots of practice and I continually work to improve my skills needed to paint and draw competently.
I hope that those who look at my pictures find something familiar in their experience of nature.
